Reuters is seeking an experienced editor to lead its Mexico fact-checking service.
The ideal candidate will take the lead on highly visible projects with major clients as well as juggle the demands of editorial standards in both English and Spanish, and manage people leadership, newsroom integration and business development.
This hybrid working position is based in Mexico City.
About the role
- Oversee a large fact-checking project that covers the U.S. and Mexico while fostering a positive, collaborative and inclusive work environment
- Support fact-check article production in both Spanish and English and build closer ties with the broader Reuters news file
- Lead a team of fact-checking journalists covering the region
- Collaborate with journalists and editors across the newsroom to develop fact-checking articles and identify news stories
- Ensure deliverables outlined in our fact-checking partnerships are met
- Strengthen relationships with clients and partners
- Explore the latest digital verification techniques and tools
- Ensure that stories meet Reuters’ standards for accuracy, speed, balance and clarity
- Enforce Reuters’ editorial and ethical standards, adhering to style, guidelines and policies laid out by the Reuters Trust Principles and the Reuters Handbook of Journalists
- Produce fact-checking articles or explainers when required Readily and enthusiastically adapt to client demands
About you
- At least five years of international news writing and/or editing experience, ideally with a news agency
- Impeccable writing in Spanish and English, including a proven track record
- Demonstrated experience of editing under tight deadlines and sharing constructive feedback with journalists
- People management experience is preferred
- Strong reporting and editing skills in English and Spanish, and the ability to work independently
- A proven interest in covering U.S. and Mexican politics and deep knowledge of misinformation trends
- Experience working in fact-checking/misinformation/digital verification
- Strong news judgment and the ability to identify emerging trends and misinformation
- Proven ability to work nimbly and quickly with multiple teams
